Nury Vittachi
Mr. Jam writes like a tabloid reporter and is not shy about constantly promoting himself as a Hong Kong literary figure. For someone who does not share our language, culture, and not to mention our literature, he has made some outlandish claims.
Mr. Jam brings up the subject of literature routinely in his
blogs (yes, he has more than one blog). Literature speaks to us from
the heart and soul of its authors, of its soil; it tells the truth,
it reflects the human condition, and it stirs our soul. All three
reviewers are fortunate to have met some living literary legends in
the lecture halls of their alma mater. They can't
help but feel humbled in these preeminent writers' presence. Literature
is a weighty subject; the word literature should not be used lightly.
By reading Mr. Jam's blogs, some may think he and his expat friends who comment on his blogs have the pulse of the city perfectly right. In reality, people who know Hong Kong understand that they're a group in the 1% of the HK population, socially insulated and isolated from the rest. His blogs are excellent places to find out how these Western-thinking expats of a small insular community in Hong Kong see Hong kong.
Being a minority within a tiny minority group in HK, Mr. Jam, otherwise known as Nury Vittachi, is flamboyant, often overcompensating. And more often than not, he writes floridly as if he is an overly zealous salesman who has a bale of goods that needs to be sold quickly.
Mr. Jam and his friends talk about the Hong Kong natives but actually talk with very few of them. Clinging to the past, they are oblivious to the changing social and political reality around them. Going through the comments in Mr. Jam's blogs, it seems that, for the most part, the Chinese/Cantonese speaking natives are shadowy figures in the background or invisible to these expats; one wonders what country they actually live in.
The reviewers say, they live in a different world.
